It's just dark.

The power went out at 4am this morning. My brain is still on Mallorca time, so I was already awake, laying and staring in the dark, when the face of my alarm clock went black.

I went downstairs, suited up, and pulled on my running shoes. Once outside, I started trotting down the middle of the street, my headlamp showing the way. Without it, it would have been impossible. Our neighborhood was pitch black.

In the summer, putting on my running shoes before 6am is easier to stomach. The days are long and sunrise is early.

This time of year though, as the season changes, my caveman brain is reluctant to venture outside. I have to remind myself, it’s no different than two months ago.

It’s just dark.
